Adrian Newey is officially no longer working for Red Bull Racing. The aero genius remains part of Red Bull Advanced Technologies until the completion of the RB-17 Hypercar in early 2025. However, Newey has become a free agent for next season without the need for gardening leave. Unsurprisingly, many teams would be interested in signing the 65-year-old. However, it seems that Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari might be the front runner in the race to sign the Briton.

Scuderia Ferrari has gone through a phase of rebuilding since Fred Vasseur was appointed Team Principal in 2023. The Frenchman has made major changes at Maranello with results to prove the impact of his efforts. Most notably, Vasseur managed to sign seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton on a multi-year-deal, something his predecessors failed to do.

Hamilton has made it clear that he aims to win an unprecedented eighth world title. The 39-year-old believed that Ferrari would be the right place to win another world championship. However, despite having immense resources, the Scuderia failed to match Newey and Red Bull in F1’s ground effect era. As such, one might wonder if Lewis Hamilton‘s eighth world title depends on Adrian Newey‘s Ferrari deal.

Adrian Newey could be the final puzzle in Fred Vasseur’s Ferrari plans

Fred Vasseur has brought in almost every ingredient needed to succeed in F1. Gaining Lewis Hamilton’s trust was perhaps the biggest win for the Scuderia. However, the Italian team continues to lag behind Red Bull in terms of development. Ferrari made impressive progress over the winter with Carlos Sainz winning in Australia. However, it was clear that Red Bull had a superior car.

The new regulations in 2026 could shake-up the grid. It must be noted during the last rule change in 2022, Ferrari came close but couldn’t become the dominant force. Although, Fred Vasseur’s vision could provide the team with much-needed direction, the Italian team still seems to lack a strong technical leader. This might push the Scuderia behind Mercedes and Audi if the team fails to make gains in car design.

There are no doubts that Adrian Newey would have a massive impact if he was to join Ferrari. The 65-year-old reportedly even met with Vassuer in London recently. The aero genius has an extremely competitive spirit and would bring in years of experience to the Scuderia. Newey would push himself and the team to the limits of the regulations to bring glory back to Maranello. However, this might depend on the contract as Adrian Newey had taken a step back from day-to-day operations in recent years.

Nevertheless, Adrian Newey’s skills could undoubtedly be the key element that finally ends Ferrari’s title-drought. Lewis Hamilton’s arrival might further push Vasseur to try and get his hands on the aero-genius. Ultimately, a Hamilton-Newey combo could be one of the greatest duos in the sport’s history. Moreover, it could finally allow Lewis Hamilton to make history with an eighth F1 world championship.
