AC Milan are entering a crucial stage of the Stefano Pioli era, deciding on his replacement, and currently, there are no favourites for the job. Today, a report has shown the list of candidates that remain.

Whilst Pioli’s work will be commended, this season has been difficult for him and the club. Milan have fallen short in several ways and faced humility in their Europa League exit and the Derby della Madonnina fixtures, which has resulted in the 58-year-old’s tenure being effectively over.

That decision may be simple, but the following steps are unclear. The Rossoneri had seemingly elected their next head coach, Julen Lopetegui. Nevertheless, backlash from the fans quickly halted that motion, serving as a harsh reminder to the management about the importance of their decision.

This morning, Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) have written that few names remain on the list, with the process nearly over. Mark van Bommel’s name is gaining popularity, especially considering his relationship with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Paolo Fonseca’s name also is on the rise.

However, Gazzetta believes that Milan have a favoured candidate. Roberto De Zerbi. His work at Brighton has been hugely impressive, and the Rossoneri are big fans. What they are not big fans of, though, is his €15 million release clause, which could halt any movement for him.
